Evaluation:

From the beginning of this project I knew there would be a lot of challenges, some in which were successful and some that I could improve upon. A strength within my work is my ability to frame my pictures when shooting to create strong compositions and the placement of my subject. I have found that this is very strong through out my images and creates a coherent set of photographs.

Another strength within my work is the use of contrast and coherency of colour within my work. this has enabled me to effectively create strong themes in each of my final prints, creating a strong body of composed images. Using this method to create editorial portrait photographs, I have successfully produced 4 final prints, one 10x12 print and 3 7x5 prints.

Also, I found that my time keeping had improved from my last project, which allowed me to be more flexible with when I shoot and edit. By creating and sticking to a plan I found that if any problems occurred I would have more than enough time to re-shoot and edit.

Another strength within my work that I improved upon from my previous project was my use of editing skills. When editing these images I found that I had to be more strict with how much I could edit each photograph. To achieve this I had to refine the amount of elements i would need to change within a photograph so that it was ready to print. by improving this from the last project, I found that I didn’t need to do much editing, which meant the printing process was much faster. I would like to continue to develop this skill in future projects, as I believe it gives great perspective into editing photographs to a professional standard.

Although I have done this, I felt as though the lighting in my cover print is different to the lighting in the smaller prints. Due to shooting in different parts of the house it is clear that some images show different levels of tone, which effects the way the images fit as a series. Within some of my work I have found it a little challenging to make the light equal through out my series and would like to improve upon this in my following project. To achieve this in my following project I will compose my images with similar lighting as to produce images with the same tonal range.

Another improvement I would make to my work is to focus on a variety of different images so that the series doesn’t look as repetitive. In my final prints it is clear that there is a clear theme of colour but I would like to work on creating a coherent series of images that have a variety of positions of the subject. To achieve this in my next project I will also focus on composing my images so that there is a clear variation of positions and levels.

Overall, I have found this project successful in strengthening my understanding of how to produce a relevant and professional body of work and what skills I have to work on to improve the quality of my work. Although I started everything on time I found that due to some difficulty with equipment that some of my time was not used sufficiently. To strengthen my next project I will ensure that I variate my composition, positioning of the subject, refer to my research and improve upon my skills using fill in flash.

This project has successfully strengthened my understanding of how to produce a coherent family of images through use of colour, framing, composition and light although these are all elements I will need apply to improve the quality of the work I produce in future.

Final 10x12 Cover Print:

I chose this image because I really think the lighting is similar to my researched artist Alec Soth. I also chose this image because the composition would work really well as a cover image. Although in this image it is hard to see the detail in this image I have tried to focus on including as many personal details within the image so that the audience can connect with the subject and the image becomes personal to the viewer. As I said when selecting this as the final image, I like the asymmetry of the paintings on the wall and how his elbow lines up with the line of the television. I feel this also creates a personal feeling within the image for the audience to connect with.

Third Final 7x5 Print:

I chose this image because I liked the continuation of the contrasting colours of orange and turquoise. I found that this image fit with the rest because of the hints of orange. As well as this, I also focused on the composition within this image. Like the last shot I really wanted the subject to be the focal point of the image. Another reason why I chose this image is the contrast between the subjects hair and the wall and the way the subjects head breaks up the line running through the image. I especially liked this image because it was very reminiscent of one of Alec Soth’s Images of the older woman sitting on the sofa holding a framed picture. I also found that the lighting I achieved was also similar to that photograph.

Another aspect of this image that stood out to me was the use of pattern and negative space. I love the contrast between the heavy patterning of the cushions and table cloth to the plain, block colour of the wall. I also like the expression of the subject and feel that this image is more personal and will help the the audience connect with the subject.
